Selenium: Is this micronutrient the key to the cure?
It is quite puzzling why a cure for cancer is so elusive when there are so many natural and nontoxic compounds that can effectively and safely kill cancer cells while causing no side effects or harm to normal cells. The supportive science is very compelling for many potentially safe and naturally occurring compounds that can selectively kill cancer cells. It seems that the only roadblock to the clinical evaluation of these compounds is the economic incentive required to conduct clinical trials and the ability to obtain a patent.
There are numerous viable alternatives to FDA approved chemotherapeutic drugs that are inexpensive, safe and highly effective. Selenium in the form, selenized yeast, is probably the best supplemental form and 200 micrograms daily is the optimal recommended dose.
One could alternately eat 4-5 Brazil nuts daily. For therapeutic purposes, sodium selenite has proven to be the most effective form of selenium. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that sodium selenite is a potent selective chemotherapeutic agent for nearly every type of human cancer. Studies have demonstrated that sodium selenite, at very low concentrations, can selectively trigger apoptosis in breast, prostate, lung, colon and brain cancers in addition to leukemia and lymphoma, This means that sodium selenite kills (by triggering apoptosis) only cancer cells while causing no harm to normal healthy cells. This fact was known prior to 1980 and subsequent studies have replicated this effect numerous times for most forms of human cancer. The mechanisms for the cancer cell killing effect of sodium selenite are precisely identified. Studies have indicated a much-enhanced response to chemotherapy and radiation when combined with sodium selenite.
Mainstream oncology will most likely ignore the science but opportunities to exploit the power of sodium selenite by naturopathic and integrative medicine are taking place today. Sodium selenite, Na2SeO3, is one of the inorganic forms of selenium. The physical properties of the sodium selenite molecule are perfect for use as a systemic chemotherapeutic agent. Sodium selenite is a small molecule that is completely water-soluble and easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. As such, it has been highly effective in treating brain tumors. Sodium selenite diffuses to all tissues in the body including bone which means that it is effective for treating bone metastasis. All forms of selenium can be toxic and potentially lethal at very high doses. The maximum safe daily intake is 800 micrograms but studies have shown that selenium is safe at 3200 micrograms daily over one year. The therapeutic dose for sodium selenite is between 5,000 to 30,000 micrograms administered intermittently maintaining the average level well below toxicity. There is an unjustified fear of toxicity from the use of sodium selenite beyond the accepted safe daily intake level. Signs of excessive intake of selenium include garlicky breath, hair loss and abnormal fingernail growth. Sodium selenite can be administered orally as a sublingual or intravenously through a port, PICC line or small vein.
Sodium selenite acts very rapidly inducing apoptosis within 12-24 hours in a time and dose dependent manner. In some cases, sodium selenite can be used alone in cancer treatment but the addition of agents such as vitamin K3 boosts its potency. Sodium selenite acts as a pro-oxidant meaning that it triggers the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the cell. Cancer cells are already under a very high level of oxidative stress and any additional oxidative stress will trigger apoptosis. Intravenous sodium selenite is an excellent alternative to high dose intravenous vitamin C. There is a 10,000 times difference in the required dose to trigger apoptosis and sodium selenite has a much longer half-life than vitamin C. High dose vitamin C is marginally effective in cancer treatment primarily due to the rapid excretion through the kidneys during and after an IV infusion. In other words, the concentration and time required for vitamin C to kill cancer cells is highly limited. This not the case with sodium selenite because only 1/10,000th of the concentration is required and it remains at a therapeutic concentration in the blood plasma for days as opposed to 30-60 minutes.
For most cancers, if all major growth factors are under control, sodium selenite alone is an excellent selective chemotherapeutic agent that should be fully exploited in naturopathic, integrative and conventional oncology. Technically, sodium selenite is not a drug. It is a nutritional supplement that can be purchased in any health food store. If sodium selenite were supplied at the optimal concentration in the appropriate form, it would be an extremely inexpensive over-the-counter cancer treatment available to anyone.
